Youth are introduced to sailing, canoeing, kayaking and water games. Various land games are also included to make for a fun-filled week. Sign-ups are limited to ensure a small group setting.
Beginning Sailing
Campers are introduced to the exciting sport of sailing. They start out learning the basics aboard the 8' Bug. Topics include proper safety afloat, rigging and stowing of related equipment, reading the wind, and safe boat handling skills. Various activities are intertwined to keep the atmosphere fun and relaxed. Camp runs a full day from 8:30 am-4 pm and is open to campers ages 8-15.
Intermediate Sailing
Campers who have mastered the Beginning Sailing Camp are ready for the next level. Based on an instructor evaluation, campers can continue to polish their skills aboard Lasers and Capris. Camp runs a full day from 8:30 am-4 pm and is open to campers ages 8-15.
Advanced Sailing/Introduction to Racing
Campers who have mastered the Intermediate level can move on to the next level. Students learn the skills associated with keelboats including how to sail the boat working together as a crew. In addition, they learn the introductory skills associated with racing sailboats. Camp is offered in full day sessions from 8:30 am-4 pm and is open to campers ages 10 and up.
Instructors
All supervising instructors are experienced, trained and certified by U.S. Sailing or the Navy Sailing Foundation. All instructors are certified in CPR and have had extensive first aid and water safety training.
Water Safety Requirements
All students are given a swimming check-out on the first day of class. This enables the instructor to know the swimming ability of each child. The check-out includes swimming 50 yards (any stroke), treading water for two minutes and putting on a life jacket while in the water. Successful completion of the swimming check-out is required to continue in the camp.
Meals
Sack lunches are suggested. The Marina store has miscellaneous food items and drinks available for purchase.
Clothing
On the first day of class bring a swimsuit and a change of clothes. Deck or canvas shoes that will not be affected by water are recommended. No hard-soled shoes, sandals without heel straps, flip-flops or bare feet are allowed. A bag packed with a hat, sunscreen and a long sleeve shirt is recommended for sunny or cooler days. Showers are available.
Conduct
Behavioral problems will not be tolerated. Campers are to conduct themselves in a manner that is conducive to a positive learning environment. If problems arise, instructors may remove the camper from a given activity for an appropriate amount of time. If problems persist, campers will be expelled from the camp without a refund.
Hours
Staff will be on-site at 8 am for early drop off. Camp concludes at 4 pm and campers are to be picked up by 4:15 pm at the latest. If you want your child to bike or walk home, see the enrollment application or provide the instructor with a written note on the first day of class.
