2025 Point Mugu Surf Contest | July 26-27 | 8 am– 6 pm

The Navy is opening the base to showcase one of the best surf spots in southern California.

This highly anticipated two-day surf event is one you don't want to miss. The break at Point Mugu is known throughout the surfing community in Ventura County and beyond. Located aboard Naval Base Ventura County, (NBVC) Point Mugu access to the spot is restricted to Military and DoD Civilian personnel throughout the year. In 2008 the Point Mugu Surf Contest was created to give surfers from the general public the chance to ride the waves. Ever since then Military and civilian surfers from around the globe have competed in the contest.

The contest is divided into four divisions; Military, Open Men's, Open Women's, & Jr's. First rounds of the competition happen on Saturday with the simi finals & finals taking place on Sunday. The winners from each division will take home cash prizes!

Surfing is not the only thing going on at the Point Mugu Surf Contest. We will have an assortment of vendors, family activities, & a 1-day winner take all Cornhole tournament as well.

Guests may enter NBVC, Point Mugu via the Las Posas gate starting at 7:00 am. The gate will remain open to the public until 3 pm. In the event that we reach capacity the gate will be closed to in bound traffic. It is advised that you arrive early and to carpool.

From Los Angeles / Northbound Highway 101

  • Take the Las Posas Road exit and travel South 7 miles to Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu.

From Ventura / Southbound Highway 101

  • Take the Las Posas Road exit and travel South 7 miles to Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu.

From Santa Monica / Northbound Pacific Coast Highway 1

  • Take Pacific Coast Highway to the Las Posas Road exit.

Surf Contest

The 2025 Point Mugu Surf Contest includes four divisions; Military, Open Men’s, Open Women’s, & Jr’s (17 & under). This year surfers in each division will compete to win cash prizes. First place in each division will win $500, second place will win $300, and third place will take home $200. Space is limited, there will not be a waiting list for this event. Surfers who register and fail to check in for their heat will not compete. Substitutions are not accepted. All competitors will have access to the practice area on Saturday. Sunday’s access to the water will be limited to finalists only. All proceeds benefit our Navy Quality of Life Programs here at Naval Base Ventura County.

Cornhole Tournament

Registration is NOW OPEN for the Point Mugu Surf Contest's Cornhole Tournament. Sign up your 2-person team today for a chance to win $500. The competition is limited to 32 teams and is open to the public to participate in. This one-day tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 26 starting at 11 am. ACO rules apply. Teams should check in 30 minutes prior to the start of the tournament.

FAQ’s

Where do I enter?
All visitors will enter NBVC Point Mugu through the Las Posas Gate starting at 7 am. The gate will remain open to the public until 3 pm. In the event we reach capacity the gate will be closed to in bound traffic. It is advised that you arrive early and to carpool.

When can I enter?
The Las Posas Gate will open at 7:00 am.

Is there a cost to attend?
No. the event is free to attend and parking is also free

Who is allowed to come to the event?
Everyone. The event is open to the public. All guests 10 years and up are required to have a photo ID with them at all times.

Where is the event location?
The event is located at Surfers Beach, NBVC Point Mugu.

What if it rains?
This event is rain or shine.

Will food and beverages be available?
Yes. Food and beverages will be available for sale. ATM’s may will not be available so we ask the public to bring cash and cards to purchase food and beverage items from our vendors. All official surf contest merchandise will be cashless so cards will be needed for this.

Can I bring a camera with a large telephoto lens?
YES, cameras with telephoto lenses are allowed for the strict purpose of photographing surfers. Photographers may only photograph surfers in the water. Individuals pointing their cameras in other directions may be asked to leave and/or subject to review of your images. All camara bags/backpacks are subject to search.

I am with the media, who should I contact to cover the event?

Where can I park?
Parking will be located near the event site, within easy walking distance. Look for signage and follow the direction of Military Police and parking attendants. Carpooling is highly encouraged.

What can I bring with me?
Bottled water, cameras, small bags/purses, sunscreen, beach chairs, umbrellas, towels. All guests and their vehicles are subject to search upon entering NBVC and again at the main event entrance.

What items are prohibited?
Alcohol, Drugs including marijuana, weapons including knives, pets, coolers of any size, & drones. Other restrictions may apply.

Do I need to have my ID with me?
YES, guests 10 years and up should be prepared to show a valid ID if asked to do so by Military Police.

How can I watch the surf contest?
Viewing locations include the beach (during low tide) and the breakwater rocks. A folded-up beach towel makes a great cushion for siting on the rocks. Limited bleacher seating is available at no cost. Extra caution should be used when viewing from the rocks due to the uneven surfaces. This event is not streamed over the internet.

Will there be First Aid on site?
Yes, a first aid tent will be visible & located near the announcers/judge’s tower. Rescue personnel from the Navy Federal Fire Dept. will be on site for additional support if needed.
